Before the Giant sale runs out I (A.) couldn't resist sharing:

Super Savings Saturday: CVS and Target

I scored some super savings at CVS and Target this week that are worth sharing!

I haven't been shopping much at CVS since my toddler moved out of diapers. But this week I wanted to try to get some Huggies wipes because I keep a stash of diapers & wipes for baby shower gifts. I read that ECB holders were finding Huggies wipes coupons on the coupon printers in-store. It was true for me! A $2 Huggies wipes coupon AND a $5/$15 coupon printed. Score! I used a $3 Sensodyne toothpaste coupon, the $2 wipes coupon, a $1 off any Johnson & Johnson baby product coupon, & the $5/$15 coupon. Check out the picture above to see what I got for $3.42!

I needed a few things at Target, and I wanted to see if I could work a Kraft cheese deal I read about. It worked! I spent $1.75 on the items in the picture below. Here is what I used:
3 $2/2 Right Guard deodorant coupons
3 $1 off any Johnson & Johnson baby product manu coupons
1 $1/2 Kraft cheese coupon
2 Target $1/1 Kraft cheese coupons (only prints 1 per computer; we have 2 computers)

Where did you find savings this week? Leave us a comment and do tell!

Birthday Rewards: FirstWatch and Coldstone Creamery

Since my son was sick on my birthday and I got sick soon after, I almost missed out on redeeming some of my birthday rewards coupons! We wouldn't want that?!

We really enjoyed my birthday rewards this year because my husband was out of town all week and the coupons gave us fun "dates" to anticipate. I took my toddler to Fuddruckers, FirstWatch and Coldstone Creamery in addition to Austin Grill. I had a coupon for a free entree at Fuddruckers, and upon inquiring I was told by my local restaurant that I could get anything up to $8.00 off the menu. I chose my favorite salad, bought my toddler a kids meal and smiled.

I had another free entree coupon for FirstWatch, a breakfast & lunch restaurant. I chose a breakfast entree and bought my toddler a kids meal. I should have just shared my entree because it was so much food! Next year.

I had a "Like It" coupon from Coldstone Creamery, and I let my toddler choose the ice cream flavor and mix-in. He loved that. We had a great time enjoying my birthday rewards coupons and feel very blessed to live near so many yummy restaurants!

Chick-fil-a: Free Breakfast tomorrow!

If you're into Chick-fil-a like we are, Frugal Friends has the scoop here on how Chick-fil-a is offering free breakfast items on Thursdays in January and February. I've seen signs at the Fair Oaks Mall and Chantilly locations, so it seems pretty widespread.

As always, we recommend calling your location to verify participation.

It's a good day for free food! Don't forget that you can also eat for nearly free at Hard Times Cafe. Click here for more details.

Pampers Gifts to Grow: Free Codes!

Reader Jen reminded us that 2 free codes are available for Pampers Gifts to Grow participants.

If you're not into the Pampers Gifts to Grow program yet but actually use Pampers, we highly recommend it. I only used brand name diapers for my now potty trained toddler about half the time, but even so, I still accumulated enough Pampers points to earn a free Shutterfly photo album last year. If you stick with it and enter the points as you buy packs and see codes on the internet, you, too can earn something free!

P.F. Chang's: Rewards Club

About a month ago I caught wind of a new rewards club that P.F. Chang's started.

Always looking for discounts and deals, I signed up using the email address I reserve for coupons, samples, rewards clubs, etc. I did have to give my mailing address, so in today's mail I was surprised to receive a plastic rewards card from P.F. Chang's. The mailing stated that I could use the card to receive a 10% discount each time I dine there. That's an interesting concept I haven't seen any other restaurant chains use!

Works for Me Wednesday: Cutting Myself Deals

It's Wednesday, and that means it's time for another "Works for Me Wednesday" tip, as hosted by the blog carnival at We Are THAT Family. See this week's Works for Me Wednesday here.

I often must contend with two sides of my personality: the "Ooooo must try NOW!" side, and the frugal side. Obviously the instant-gratification personality is at odds with the frugal side (not to mention our budget), so I kind of keep the instant gratification side in check by cutting myself deals.

Here's an example: I see a delicious-looking recipe online. Said recipe involves an ingredient that I don't have. For instance, in the past couple of weeks or so I saw a tidbit on how to make your own authentic Japanese teriyaki sauce. Since I love stir-fry-style meals that come together quickly, I thought, "Ooooo must try NOW!" But - the recipe called for mirin (sweet rice wine), which I do not have. My cabinet is packed with couponed condiments, including bottled (not-so-authentic) teriyaki sauce. I cut myself a deal: Once you finish using all of the bottled teriyaki in the pantry, you can buy mirin at the best possible price, unless there's a major deal in the interrim.

Now, by "best possible", I mean I would still bargain hunt - checking local Asian grocers' prices against those on Amazon, for instance.

So, why is this little habit one I've found worth forming?
  • It delays gratification. Like the "Eat from the Pantry" challenge we did in January, this is just a great exercise in and of itself in terms of building patience and discipline.

  • It still promises gratification if the desire persists long-term. This makes the established delay easier to tolerate at the moment that I want to purchase the item. Instead of "No", it's "Not now", so I can get over the hump and move on.

  • Postponing the purchase for a not-too-specific future date means that it will probably be long after I finish the bottled teriyaki sauce that I remember my "deal" with myself - if I remember it at all. After all, I'm not going to go from cooking a weeknight dinner with the last of the teriyaki sauce - straight to the grocery store for some mirin!

  • There's a decent possibility that in the interim, I'll find a coupon, sale, or other special involving the desired item, whereas had I purchased it immediately instead of cutting myself a deal, I would have paid too much.
In other words, putting a "deal-ay" between my desire to buy something and its possible purchase is a great way to save myself some money and teach myself some patience, without total deprivation.

Do you cut yourself deals? What are your deal-cutting strategies?

Menu Plan Monday

Generally, I'm trying to allocate animal proteins to dinnertime for my husband; he usually also takes a serving of leftover dinner to work the next day for lunch. This way he gets a bit more needed protein and I can do lighter fruit-veggie-and-grain-centered lunches for me and my girls!

Monday:
Breakfast: Instant oatmeal, banana
Lunch: Yoghurt, curried couscous, crackers
Dinner: Frozen lasagna, garlic bread, broccoli

Tuesday:
Breakfast: Mango/banana vanilla yoghurt smoothies, hot chocolate
Lunch: Spinach salad, tomatoes, gorgonzola, shiitake sesame vinaigrette, dried blueberries
Dinner: Baked chicken drumsticks, home fries

Wednesday:
Breakfast: Milk, banana, Fiber One bars
Lunch: Sesame ginger teriyaki stir-fry: bok choy, edamame, carrots, brown rice
Dinner: Burrito bowls: Brown rice, taco-seasoned ground beef, edamame, sour cream, shredded cheese, etc.

Thursday:
Breakfast: Milk, brown rice porridge from leftover brown rice
Lunch: PB&J, apple slices
Dinner: Gorton's popcorn shrimp (on sale at Giant this week!) served over salads with caesar dressing

Friday:
Breakfast: Milk, toaster oven strawberry crumble (frozen strawberries, butter, oats, brown sugar)
Lunch: Gorton's salmon fillets (also on sale at Giant, using the toaster oven again!), salad
Dinner: Scrambled eggs, sausage, roasted asparagus

Report from the Field: Gorton's Deal at Giant This Week!

Ooooweeeee it's a good time to buy yourself some frozen seafood at Giant! The Gorton's Deal going on this week is as follows:

Gorton's Seafood, HALF PRICE
Deal: Buy $10 worth of Gorton's items in one transaction and $4 will be instantly deducted from your order. Limit 1 offer per transaction.
$1/2
$1/2
Grilled Shrimp item, $0.50/1, 01/03
Grilled item, $0.50/1, 01/03
$1/any 2, or $0.40/1, 01/24

I did two rounds of the Gorton's deal this morning since I had a few of the $0.40/1 01/24 SS coupon - and while harvesting from the freezer I overheard two employees talking about how the Gorton's was sure to be raided this week. If you can make it to your Giant today, I recommend doing so, because this deal is HOT!

I should note that the checkout automatically credited me my $4 in one transaction, and strangely didn't for the other. You can learn from my experience: check your receipt carefully before you leave the store to make sure that you get your $4 instant deduction.

The three main Gorton's items I focused on:

Two-fillet boxes (pollock or other white fish): $1.84 (retail $3.69)
Two-fillet salmon: $2.19 (retail $4.39)
14 oz. bags of popcorn shrimp: $2.99 (retail $5.99)

There are a lot of ways that these can be combined for a $10 total.

Here are just a couple of ideas:

$ 2.19 salmon
$ 2.19 salmon
$ 2.19 salmon
$ 1.84 other
$ 2.19 salmon
$ 2.99 popcorn shrimp
$ 1.84 other
$ 2.99 popcorn shrimp
$ 1.84 other

$ 10.25 subtotal
$ 10.01 subtotal
$ (4.00) instant deduction
$ (4.00) instant deduction
$ (4.00) coupons
$ (3.20) coupons
$ 2.25 total
$ 2.81 total
$ 0.45 each
$ 0.56 each

In the first scenario above, you're paying just $2.25 for $20.55 retail-valued seafood! That's an 89% Savings. ;-D

Are you working the Gorton's deal this week? What scenarios did you do? Share the details! :-D

Frugal Fridays: Budget Travel, Part 1

Just 2 weeks ago I had the wonderful opportunity to join my husband on one of his business trips. He regularly travels to California, and I got to join him last fall in L.A.

This time we went to San Francisco! I've always wanted to go there - to see the Golden Gate Bridge, tour Alcatraz, sample Ghirardhelli chocolate in its hometown, maybe even ride a cable car!

But how does one complete budget travel in a place like San Francisco? I'll share a few tips that worked for us.

Budget Travel: Part 1

  • Join your spouse on an already scheduled business trip. Buying one air ticket is much cheaper than two, and we were even able to utilize my husband's already booked rental car. We paid for 2 days on the rental car over our long weekend. We paid one baggage fee of $20 on my way out because I traveled separately. My husband has earned premier status with United, so he doesn't pay any baggage fees.

  • Visit friends! Travel is always a good excuse to see people you miss, and we have wonderful friends spread out across the country. We were blessed to be able to stay with friends while there, even getting to play with their kids and experience worship at their church. Another friend even traveled across town to visit us. Staying with our friends meant that we were 1 hour outside the city, so we planned accordingly and played in San Fran all day upon my arrival. On day 2 we drove 1.5 hours to see some redwoods at Muir Woods.

  • Be willing to eat fast food or takeout while on travel. I tend to be the picky one in our family, preferring fresh produce and food variety all the time. This point is really one for me! I've learned to bring Chick-fil-a coupons when I travel and seek out those restaurants if possible. We saved $6 on a Chick-fil-a meal because of the coupons I brought along. I also researched restaurants and printable coupons before leaving home and printed some Chevy's coupons. We ordered Chevy's takeout one night and picked up Baja Fresh another night. And when in California, one has to eat at In-N-Out, right? We did that one day for lunch, as well.

  • Be content with low-cost or free activities. For us on this particular trip, this meant being content with not paying ticket prices. We wanted to do an Alcatraz tour, but we weren't able to get tickets at a time that worked for us. I really enjoyed the view we got from walking out on the Golden Gate Bridge, then zooming in with my husband's camera. I have been fascinated with bridges ever since I read David McCullough's The Great Bridge: The Epic Story of the Building of the Brooklyn Bridge. So seeing and walking the Golden Gate was a big moment for me. Another highlight was driving Lombard Street, San Fran's "crookedest street."

Stay tuned for more budget travel ideas!

  • Go to Swagbucks through our referral link by clicking here.
  • Sign up and create a new profile for yourself.
  • Search a few times a day, and you'll start seeing points accumulate.
I use Swagbucks to search 2-3 times a day, 3-4 days a week for things I would normally research. I usually cash out my Swagbucks for Starbucks gift cards, but there are lots of other cool prizes in the Swagbucks store.

As a disclaimer, if you sign up under our referral link, we will receive Swagbucks thanks to you.

Circus Deals: Big Top at Dulles and Ringling Bros. at Verizon Center or Patriot Center

Two circus deals came across my desk recently. I guess March is the month for the circus!

I know most people take their kids to see the circus, but I have fun memories of a date early in marriage that my husband planned. It was a surprise and he gave me clues along the way, like "it will be smelly" or "it will remind you of home(my parents' farm). Not one to easily stitch together clues, I still had no idea of what we were attending until we got to the doors of the Patriot Center. What fun!

Here are the deals:
  • Save up to 30% per ticket on the Big Apple Circus at Dulles Town Center in March by clicking here. Or call 888-541-3750 and use code STB10.
  • Save up to 20% per ticket on the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus at the Verizon Center in March by clicking here. Use presale password WSE.

A lot of freebies work checking out - not to mention cheap sausage. :)

Top Five Reasons to Visit Giant This Week:
  1. Bob Evans Express Fresh Breakfast Links, $1.99
    $0.50/1 breakfast item, 01/24 SS
    (Please note: the coupon states "$0.50 off any Bob Evans Frozen Breakfast Item, available in your grocer's refrigerated or freezer section...since I don't know if the Express Fresh Links are refrigerated or frozen [anybody care to enlighten me?], the verdict's still out as to whether this matchup works...)
    Final price: $0.99

  2. Eckrich Smoked Sausage, $1.99
    $0.55/1, 01/31 SS
    Final price: $0.89

  3. Green Giant Boxed Vegetables, 4/$5

    Grilled item, $0.50/1, 01/03

    I'm pretty sure that I've seen Gorton's smallest boxes retail as low as ~$2.70/box. Half price = ~$1.35/box. If you picked up 8 of these, and used 8 $0.40/1 coupons (which should double), your $10.80 total would subtract $4 instantly, in addition to the subtracted $6.40 in coupons. Translation: Around $0.40 for 8 boxes of seafood??? I'll see how my mileage on this proposition does tomorrow - fingers crossed!

CVS: Glade candles deal and SC Johnson Rebate

A. posted quite a few good reasons to stop by CVS this week already, but when I hit the store yesterday I thought of another.

If you haven't yet submitted for your $5 SC Johnson rebate(you can submit THREE!), all you have to do is buy 3 products from any of their brands, including anything by Glade. CVS will give you $4 ECB's when you buy $12 in Glade products, so print this $3 Glade Sense & Spray coupon for a starter kit as many times as you can before going. Creative Ideas: Birthday blessings!

When my toddler awoke me way too early this morning I realized that we finally caught the stomach flu in our house. It has been passed from family to family this winter, but somehow we dodged it... until today. Happy birthday to me, I thought at 1 am as I cleaned up mess after mess. My son is a trooper when it comes to being sick, though, and for that I'm grateful.

I had all kinds of plans today to celebrate - meeting friends at the library, free lunch out with my birthday coupon at Fuddruckers, a friend coming to make dinner here --- and I cancelled them all. Hopefully we won't spread this one any further, yet I know that's out of my control to some extent.

So after all the laundry and disinfecting, I thought I'd sit down and share a few ways sweet friends & family have blessed me. You might keep these in mind for creative ideas in the future as you plan to honor your loved ones on their birthdays!

My sister-in-law hosted a surprise birthday dinner at her place Monday night. She baked Pioneer Woman's Chocolate Sheet Cake, which I'm still dreaming about. Why didn't I beg to bring any home?!

At the same dinner my father-in-law blessed me with a new zip-up jacket, Kohl's gift card and cash. He knows I like to shop!

Early this morning my dad sent an email message reminding me of my birth story and what he & mom were doing before I arrived. I mentioned before that I grew up on a farm, but have you ever heard of rendering lard?! Yes, that's what sent my mom into labor with me! I love hearing my birth story. What a gift.

A friend sent a package from Arkansas that miraculously arrived on our icy doorstep yesterday. I say miraculously because we hadn't received mail for over a week?! She always sends musical cards that are a trip.

Other friends brought me a sweet card and a big bag full of yummy peanut butter chocolate chip cookies. Yes, food is the way to my heart! These will be saved in the freezer for me to enjoy one at a time during my afternoon tea. Mmmm!

Another friend dropped off a gift which included a new set of farm animal cookie cutters and some incredibly creative letter-imprinted pink sugar cookies. She knows I'm obsessed with making cookies and decided to feed my "habit" this year!

Yet another friend brought her handmade, pastry chef grade cupcakes by since she couldn't cook me dinner in our germ-infested household. Sweet heaven and hallelujah!

Drumroll, please: possibly the icing on the cake so to speak? Hearing my 3-year-old spontaneously break into the birthday song when I brought my cupcake to the table after dinner. He could hardly eat anything, poor little sick one, yet he remembered to sing to me
all by himself, finishing with "and many more!"

I am truly blessed! Thank you Lord!

Austin Grill: birthday freebie and kids eat free

Since my husband is on travel again this week, I decided to take my toddler to dinner last night and attempt to double dip on freebies like we did at Red Hot & Blue last week.

Since Austin Grill has gone green, they posted my birthday reward on my rewards card. I checked the balance before going and was surprised to see that I had $30?! I used $20 of it on my salad, enchiladas and drink, but my toddler ate free because Tuesdays are kids eat free night! I paid less than $6 out of pocket to cover tax and tip.

If you haven't signed up for an Austin Grill Rewards Club card yet, click here to do so.

Works for Me Wednesday: CareCalendar

What are some of your favorite or most useful websites?

Google for sure, but have you heard of CareCalendar? According to the website, CareCalendar is is a web based system to organize meals and other help for families during a time of illness or life changing event, such as the birth of a baby or death of a family member.

CareCalendar can also be used for long term situations, including homebound and caregiver respite care needs.

A friend introduced me to it when her husband was deployed last year. Her church used it to bless her family in many ways - from bringing them meals to babysitting the kids to mowing lawn.

I've used CareCalendar now in a few different scenarios, and I've been really pleased with how it has helped me administratively to bless friends in time of need. I've used it for a friend who had a death in the family, a friend who had a baby, and now I'll be using it for a friend who is going through major surgery. I've researched other tools like it, and I find it easiest to use and most intuitively designed. Because others can log in to sign up for meals and get the info they need, it cuts out a lot of administrative time on email answering questions, shuffling dates, etc.

It's a free or donations-based service, and I can't say enough that it works for me!

Safeway: $15/$100 coupon in 2/14 Washington Post

Moneywise Moms has the scoop on a $15/$100 Safeway purchase coupon printed in the February 14 Washington Post. It's on page A14, and I just tore mine out.

$100 is a lot to spend at Safeway; I rarely spend more than $40-50 there at a time. Since I have a lot of birthday coupons to use and hubby will be out of town this week, I'm not even coming up with a hard-core meal plan! But I will be brainstorming ways to coupon my way to $100... and here's hoping Gina can come up with some scenarios!

This Morning's CVS Run

I'm back on the CVS wagon - got back 5 ExtraCare Bucks after this transaction - and it feels so good!!

Side note: DiGiorno's are $6.99...and this week, buy one, get one for a penny! Use two $1 coupons (01/24 SS) to make them around $2.50 each.

CVS Deal-Running: Valentine's Day

In fall 2008/winter 2009, I was a total CVS addict, hitting the store a few times a week and often netting $15-$20 worth of merchandise for under $1.

Then, in spring '09, the hot deals and $/$$ coupons kind of tapered off (especially FREE-after-ExtraCare-Bucks stuff), and I became pregnant, no longer having the energy to jump in the car and go persue a transaction, especially since my closest CVSes often ran out of the hot deal items very early in the week (and often by early Sunday morning!). Out of ExtraCare Bucks, I made only a few more runs to CVS for the rest of 2009.

But now, with my coupon file newly replenished, I'm ready to give getting back on the CVS train another go with one, maybe two runs tomorrow. Here's what I'm planning, based on the matchups for the coming week provided here:

1 Covergirl foundation $6
1 Covergirl foundation $6
1 DiGiorno pizza $6 (estimated)
1 DiGiorno pizza $0.01 (buy one, get one for a penny sale)
Filler item ~$1.99 or so
==================
$20 Subtotal

Use:
  • $4/$20 coupon (a coupon for this value, among other values, was emailed to many CVS cardholders for this weekend)
  • Covergirl Buy One, Get One Free coupon (02/07 P&G)
  • 2 DiGiorno Pizza $1 manufacturer coupons (01/24 SS)
$8 total
Receive $5 ExtraCare Bucks in return, usable on future purchase at CVS

If this works out, then I might use the $5 ECBs to get some Stacy's Pita Chips (so yummy with hummus!)

3 x Stacy's, 2/$5 this week
$0.50 filler
==========
Subtotal $8

Use:
  • $5 ECBs
  • 3 x $1 off coupons, 01/24 SS
Final price: FREE (or at least pennies)

So: This week I could end up paying ~$8 for two pieces of makeup, two frozen pizzas, and three bags of pita chips, plus filler items. Not too shabby!

Now, let's just see whether everything is in stock, and all of my coupons go through as planned. :)
