After a quick glance at the website, I noticed that the spring colors will be yellow and blue. Definitely a welcome change from last spring/summer's coral and turquoise.

Saving at The Children's Place During Monster Sale - In Person and Online!

The Monster Sale is now going on at the Children's Place. If there's a child (or a few) in your life who needs wardrobing, you can score some really good deals, often getting separates (shirts, skirts, and pants) at under $5 each, and dresses, jackets, etc. in the neighborhood of $10 or less. Girls' tights can be bought for two and a half bucks per pair or less. If you're feeling especially bold, you can buy up a size or two in anticipation of winter 2010/2011. Besides that point, we (argh) have a couple of months at least of colder weather to go, so the clearanced long sleeve shirts and corduroy pants can still get almost a full season of wear right now - and jeans and light jackets (and other layering pieces) will take you all the way through spring.

Incidentally, now that I'm home with an infant and my almost-three-year-old, I'm starting to weigh the pros and cons of online Children's Place shopping against visiting the CP outlet at Potomac Mills. I've never shopped CP online before, mainly because with a growing child it was a lot easier to visit the outlet in person - and I also like to see the sizes and quality for myself before buying when possible. But now that I've shopped at Children's Place outlet for a couple of years, I'm more familiar with what CP makes to last (jeans and belts, for example), and what usually falls apart after a season (shoes, at least in my experience). This especially useful now that I have two girls, because I know what's worth the investment given that items could possibly last through a second wearing by my younger daughter.

Since I now know generally what I'm in for quality-wise, I'm considering visiting CP online to shop for denim and other staples for my girls. Yes, I'd probably pay $5 to ship the whole thing, but to save the gas money to Woodbridge (Potomac Mills) and the hassle of wrangling an active toddler and a nursing infant might make paying that shipping fee worthwhile for once! Also, code C99AA will get me a 15% discount (thanks, Baby Cheapskate!), so that will take the edge off. Clicking through ebates.com to the Children's Place site will also net me 3% cash back. There is a brand new free shipping code that was just posted to RetailMeNot.com, so I may check that out as well.

BUT, if I decide to (deep, cleansing breaths) ultimately make the trek with the two girls to the CP outlet, I will definitely be bringing this 15% off January 2010 coupon with me (with thanks to the Coupon Divas!).

A Fall of Stocking Up In Preparation - by A.

I've been thinking a lot about what I need to do this fall to stock our cupboards and freezer. We are expecting our second daughter, due this December! Of course, the frugal streak in me immediately thought, "Sweet! Those girls' clothing deals snagged at Children's Place Outlet at Ralph Lauren Factory Outlet will get another round of wear!" :)

While we didn't exactly plan the pregnancy around the couponing hot streak of the year, it so conveniently happens that the months leading up to the holidays offer some of the most fertile deal-snagging ground on the couponing calendar. With the kickoff of the school year and the triple-whammy that is Halloween, then Thanksgiving, then Christmas, the deals on nonperishables and convenience foods are sure to be plentiful. I'm going to be like a crazed little squirrel, stockpiling for the winter (not to mention the weeks and weeks of fuzzy newborn days sure to accompany). It's amazing how a little time in the couponing zone can transform your outlook to strategizing months, even (occasionally) years ahead.

Example of the "years" bit: Even last winter, when I was still a few months into couponing, I did a crazy run at CVS right after Christmas, and netted over $40 worth of decorations and gift-wrap supplies for around $6, using coupons, post-Christmas clearance prices, etc. Now, even though it's August, I'm eyeing the tall pile of gift bows, wrapping paper, bendable evergreen boughs, and garland in the "Christmas corner" of our basement storage area, and I'm admittedly getting a little irrationally excited about decorating most of my downstairs this time around for $6 in change. The less money spent on the fun fluff, the more resources are available for more important priorities, like close family's gifts and giving more to your local food bank, church, and charities.

If you're new to couponing, this is a great time to enter what I so affectionately call "the fray", because September through December are sure to yield an abundance of deals:

• More special double and triple coupon deals at various grocery stores, since the stores are trying to get you in to also buy your "hosting company" and "holiday celebration" hauls while you're there.
• More convenience food coupons, sales, and resulting matchups for school lunches - prepackaged/classic lunch items like applesauce cups, juice boxes, Lunchables, soups, lunchmeats, string cheese, etc.
• A huge glut of coupons, sales, and resulting coupon matchups for baking supplies - not only baking mixes for cookies, cakes, pies, and muffins, but also from-scratch nonperishables like flour, sugar, seasonings, cookie decoration supplies, canned pumpkin, raisins, etc.!
• Also coupons, sales, and resulting matchups for nonperishable holiday classics. Green beans, cream of mushroom soup, French's onions ringing a bell for anybody? Also, cranberry sauce, stuffing mixes, mashed potatos (dry mix or frozen), etc.
• In-store freebies, especially at the drugstores like CVS, Walgreens, and Rite Aid. This is usually in the vein of stocking-stuffers, candy, decorations, and so on.
• Post-holiday markdowns, like:
  --Just-clearanced Halloween candy bought with still-unexpired candy coupons (think creatively...you can crumble/chop Halloween chocolate for Thanksgiving and Christmas dessert recipes)
  --Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas decorations, clearanced by up to 90% (I bought photo Christmas cards at Target last year at ~$0.90/10 ct. box last year doing this...$0.09/card!)
• Holiday Hallmark deals at various locations. Shop smart with the offer terms and you can often snag cards (and animated stuffed animals) inexpensively.

Using Ralph Lauren 30% off Friends and Family Coupon at Potomac Mills - and the 30% off Old Navy coupon at Old Navy!

This morning I took my daughter to Potomac Mills to scope the Ralph Lauren and Old Navy outlet stores. I had the printed Ralph Lauren 30% off total purchase Friends and Family coupon, good 'til April 14, and a printed single-use 30% off total purchase Old Navy coupon that I had acquired at the Old Navy Weekly site.

I browsed the clearance racks for girls' sizes, which had a lot of short- and long-sleeved polos, collared button up shirts, and so on for little girls. All were marked above $20, and I thought, "OK, but $20 minus 30% is still pricier at ~$13 for shirts..." Then one of the employees, a very nice lady, told me that the girls' clearance rack was an additional 75% off the lowest marked prices. Ahhh-oooga!

This made a lot of the shirts (marked $29.99) $7.50 after 75% off, - and then ~$5 after the 30% discount was applied. Still a buck or two more than most Children's Place shirts after the printable monthly Children's Place Birthday Club coupons, but just over $5 for Ralph Lauren little girls' shirts is pretty cheap. Bet the consignment resale isn't too bad, either. :)

Meanwhile, over at Old Navy, I discovered that for some bizarre and inexplicable reason the Potomac Mills Old Navy outlet had a glut of Newberry and Caldecott honored kids' books - sale- and clearance-priced at $10 and under. The book that caught my eye was by one of my favorite children's authors: Mo Willems, of Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus, Don't Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late, The Pigeon Has Feelings, Too, and The Pigeon Finds a Hot Dog! The book at Old Navy was Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Tale. This five-star-reviewed Caledcott honor book is about a young toddler girl who accidentally forgets her favorite stuffed animal at the Laundromat - and the story about how she and her daddy recover Knuffle Bunny. With my 30% off coupon, these were just over $6 - a great price for such a lauded hardback book.

SO, use your 30% coupons for girls' clothes at the Potomac Mills Ralph Lauren Factory outlet, and the Old Navy Weekly coupons on Knuffle Bunny! :)

Children's Place March 2009 Coupon

We love the Children's Place outlet at Potomac Mills. For those of our readers in the D.C. area - this outlet retail location is worth visiting at least every few months if you have kids because:

• There are huge gluts of the clothes that quickly go on sale from their retail prices. Jeans that arrive in August for "back to school", marked $15-$25, are $10 by November, and $4.99 by January. Shirts that were $12.50 or so are soon $2.99!



• There is always a Children's Place birthday club coupon out there good for discounting off your entire purchase! So, those $4.99 jeans are now $4.25 if you use the 15% off March coupon. The shirt is $2.55!

Combine the outlet clearance prices with the coupon, and you are now approaching thrift/consignment prices for brand-new clothes. Yippee! Children's Place seasonal lines are highly integrated - they coordinate very well using a chosen palette of colors, so you can buy a pair of pants or a shirt and know that it will exactly match several other tops or bottoms. Using this approach, you can outfit your child for two seasons (spring/summer or fall/winter) for under $50. Less than $100 annually to clothe one child ain't shabby!
