Shopper's Triple Coupons Run #2

This morning I did run #2 at Shopper's Food Warehouse's Triple Coupons. I saved 66%, lower than my usual discount when working Shopper's deals, but was also because I'm focusing more than ususal on buying some convenience and frozen foods because of my baby being due in a few weeks. I could have easily left the store with a cartful of only freebies - and in fact, many of the freebies I pick up in these sales are donated. Click here for resources on finding your local food bank to make a difference to families in need this holiday season.

I received a $1 Catalina for having bought Uncle Ben's Long Grain and Wild Rice - I picked up 4 boxes FREE after $0.75 coupon, but I'm not sure what the Catalina terms were. Either way I have $1 to spend on my next Shopper's trip. :)

Here are some fun matchups I used that I haven't already typed up from last Thursday's trip or that readers and fellow bloggers haven't already added to the master list of Shopper's Food Warehouse triple coupon matchups:

Minute Rice microwavable 2-packs brown rice, $2.39
I love these for quick and healthy lunch additions.
(Note: you can also pick up the smaller-sized box of Minute Rice for $2.29 retail)
$0.50/1, 10/04 SS
Final price: $0.89 for a two-pack

Kellogg's Cinnabon bars, $2.99
$0.55/1, 11/08 RP
Final price: $1.34 for a 6-ct. box

Uncle Ben's Long Grain Wild Rice, various flavors, $2.19
$0.75/1, 11/08 RP
Final price: FREE! (+ Catalina, as mentioned above!)

Chock Full'o'Nuts Coffee, $3.69
$0.75/1, 11/08 SS
Final price: $1.44

Argo Baking Powder, $1.59
$0.40/1, 11/08 SS
Final price: $0.39

Alouette Cheese Spread, $6.29
(This is a splurge - I am a sucker for Alouette)
$0.75/1, 11/08 SS
Final price: $4.04

Dole Mango Chunks, frozen, $3.45
$0.75/1, 11/01 SS
Final price: $1.20/bag
(So much less work and waste than cutting a mango yourself! I will be smoothie-ing these in the near future)

Breyer's Yoghurt Inspirations, $2.69
$0.50/1, 09/13 SS
Final price: $1.19/four pack, around $0.30/cup

Halls Cough Drops, 30 ct., 2/$3
$0.50/1 any 20 ct. +, recent insert
Final price: FREE!

Menu Plan Monday

This month I started documenting our grocery budget in more detail in an Excel spreadsheet, including our household's top 20-30 most commonly bought items listed individually. Wow, what a difference just being required to record it can make! Even with generous margins built in (like for deal-catching at Shopper's Food Warehouse triple coupons this week), I find myself aware of the fact - while shopping - that I will be documenting it all when I get home. It's also simplifying my menus. I'll be curious to see if a) I can keep up the documentation, and b) the new awareness significantly impacts our grocery spending for the better.

Here is the menu plan for the week:

Monday: BLTs, salad, apple slices

Tuesday: Mac'n'cheese, salad, fruit smoothies

Wednesday: Steamfresh veggies bought cheaply at Giant, pad thai noodles with FREE CVS cashews*

Thursday: Tuna salad or egg salad sandwiches, salad

Friday: Nachos: homemade guacamole, sour cream, shredded cheddar, seasoned ground beef, diced tomatoes

***

Note:
Twice in the last week or so I've had a coupon print at the CVS coupon kiosk for $2 off the purchase of 2 Gold Emblem nut items. Since there's a huge bin of $0.99 packs of various nuts (wasabi almonds, cashews, or other types) at the front of the store, we've gotten 4 free snack-size pouches of nuts with practically zero effort. Scan your CVS card at the coupon kiosk soon to see if you might also get this "sneak freebie" coupon!

HOT Catalina Deal at Shopper's Food Warehouse: Buy $30 Worth, Get $15 in Catalinas! --and Shopper's Official Printable Coupon Acceptance Policy!

Whoa, Nelly! Gina of Moneywise Moms found a HOT hidden Shopper's Food Warehouse Catalina deal - spend $30 on participating products, get $15 worth of Catalina coupons good off your next Shopper's purchase. She worked this deal to the max - starting with just a hair over $30, bringing it down to about $11 with tripled manufacturer coupons, and leaving with $15 in Catalinas. Work it, girl.

Note: Reader Trisha also posted some useful info in a comment on this deal. THANKS!

Just a few thoughts on this deal:

1. Be very careful to buy only the items written in the fine print on the front of the ad. Not all of the pictured items are part of the promotion.

2. If you buy 2 wishbone in one transaction, a $1.50 OYNO Catalina prints out. It turns the transaction into even more of a moneymaker.

3. On one of my transactions today, it took a long time (maybe 3-4 minutes) after I paid, for my catalinas to print. I had already gone to customer service for help, when the bagger tracked me down and gave me my coupons.

Happy tripling!

Read more and learn from Gina's finesse! In the meantime we are posting the matchups that she found on our growing master listing of Shopper's Food Warehouse triple coupon matchups, with Gina's permission. (Thanks again!) Many other savvy shoppers have posted comments with matchups of their own, which have also been included in this master list, so go check it out!

Also, Gina's post alerted us to something critical: it would appear that the Shopper's Food Warehouse official Internet printable coupon acceptance policy has been greatly clarified from its previous wording. It now reads:

Internet Coupon Policy

SHOPPERS will accept valid manufacturers’ coupons obtained from the internet with a face-value up to $1.00. Internet coupons with a face value of $1.01 or above or FREE offers will not be accepted. Coupons must contain valid redemption information to be honored. SHOPPERS reserves the right to refuse any coupon deemed to be fraudulent and the right to change or terminate this policy at any time.

...so, if you are wanting to try Internet printables at Shopper's again, be sure to bring this stated policy printed out from the Shopper's web page.

5 Reasons to Visit Giant This Week, 11/6-11/12

I'm not sure if the tripler coupons that are in the ad I'm using appear regionwide - I had picked up a copy of the Post and it ended up having a Giant ad relevant to the Leesburg store grand reopening (and associated specials), and so have a hunch that these triplers may be only in the Leesburg store ads. If anybody wants to comment with whether or not their Giant ad had triplers, please go ahead and do so! If they turn out to be regionwide, I'll put time into tripler matchups.

Also, since Shopper's Food Warehouse is doing triple coupons through next Wednesday 11/11 with far less limits and parameters, we recommend that you check out that listing as well.

Here are the top five reasons to check out Giant this week:
  1. BOGO sale on Birds Eye Steamfresh Vegetables
    $1/2, $0.50/1, 10/18 SS
Use two of the $0.50/1 coupons (since you're buying two), which should double to $1 off each
Final price: $2 off the price of one Steamfresh, for two!

  2. Deal: Get a FREE gallon of milk when you purchase any 3 General Mills cereals with your Giant card! Purchase 5 General Mills cereals and get 2 FREE gallons of milk.
General Mills Cereal coupon: $1/2 (09/27 SS), $1/3, (10/04 GM and 10/18 SS)
    Listed at 2/$5:
Honey Nut Cheerios, 12.25 oz. $1/2, 11/01 SS
    Cheerios, 8.9 oz., $1/2, 11/01 SS, $0.55/1, coupons.com
Reese's Peanut Butter Puffs, 13 oz.
    Cookie Crisp, 11.25 oz.
    Golden Grahams, 12 oz.
    Kix, 8.7 oz., $0.75/1, coupons.com
    Save $3 on 3
    $1/2 Chex cereals coupon, coupons.com
    Chocolate Chex
    Wheat Chex
    Corn Chex
    Rice Chex
    Cinnamon Chex

Deal Strategy: If you already buy milk for your household think of this as a way to get near-free cereal.

Sample deal: Buy 5 boxes of Kix with $0.75/1 coupon. Depending on your store's doubling practices, you could get 5 boxes of cereal and two gallons of milk for just $5, when you'd have spent $7.18 on two gallons of milk by themselves.

Sample deal: Buy 5 boxes of Cheerios. Depending on your store's doubling practices, you could get 5 boxes of cereal and two gallons of milk for just $7, when you'd have spent $7.18 on two gallons of milk by themselves.

  3. DiGiorno Flatbread Melts, 5/$10
    $0.75/1 or $1/1, 08/16 SS
    Final price: $0.50-$1

  4. Dannon Light & Fit Yoghurt Six-Pack, 2/$4
    $0.60/1, 10/04 SS, or $1/2, 11/01 SS
Lowest final price: $0.80 per six-pack!

  5. Betty Crocker 80 Calories Mashed Potatoes, 5/$4
    $0.40/1, coupons.com, will likely double
    $0.25/1, 09/13 General Mills insert
    $0.40/1, 09/13 SS insert
    $1/2, 09/13 SS or 10/04 SS
    Lowest possible final price: FREE!
Here's a summary of other deals and Giant coupon matchups that we spotted for the coming week:

First Shopper's Food Warehouse Run - 70% Saved!

(Click above to see larger.)

Ohhhh it was a good trip to Shopper's Food Warehouse this morning. I actually got brave and did my first run using the Shopper's self checkout. I've been comfortable using the Giant one, but each self-checkout system is quirky in its own way, so I'd been hesitant to clog the self-checkouts at Shopper's with tons of coupons. This morning, though, the clogging was at the service checkouts, so I decided to go for it! I'd say it was a good experience. A few pointers:
  • If you have any coupons whose tripled total is more than the value of the product, save those 'till last - because like me, you will probably need to ask the self-checkout monitor to process those himself/herself. In my case, I had 6 of these, so it wasn't a big deal. However, if you have a TON of coupons for freebies (with overage?), you might be better off going through the service checkout.

  • Go s-l-o-w-l-y when scanning coupons, and after you've scanned the coupon, be sure to wait until the machine's done gabbing through its, "50 cents savings, 50 cents savings, 50 cents savings," tripled coupon spiel before you put the coupon in the coupon receptacle slot. Be very slow and deliberate about putting your coupon in - you are most likely to register with the machine as having submitted the coupon this way.

Triple Coupons at Harris Teeter and Shopper's Food Warehouse - Includes Our Matchups!

Thanks to an earlier post by Laura of Frugal Friends (thank you so much!), I was alerted to the delightful news that Harris Teeter and Shopper's Food Warehouse are both doing triple coupons this week/weekend! Check out Laura's post for links to the Harris Teeter triple coupon matchups, courtesy of Nova Thrifty and Southern Savers.

And, oh, HONEY. My couponing mother-in-law and I have long been in mourning for what we thought was the end of Shopper's Food Warehouse special doubling and tripling deals. After about 9 months of deals that ran fall 2008 through this past spring, suddenly Shopper's had made "double automatically up to $0.99 every day" its new standard after May, and the hot deals were nowhere to be found. I didn't have a candlelight vigil or anything, but it was still a hit to my couponing power since for those 9 months I was doing runs averaging discounts of around 75% off or more. I was picking up toiletries and cleaning products to spare - not to mention all the hottest-to-market groceries, for free or close to it.

Well, I am all too happy to report that Shopper's is back in action this week with 7 full days of triple coupons! (And there was much rejoicing...) November 5 through November 11, you can triple all manufacturers' coupons up to $0.99 in value - the only restriction listed being that you must limit yourself to four (4) identical coupons.

Here are some matchups that we spotted right away in the Shopper's ad, with freebies and cheapies ($0.50 or less) bolded. We encourage you to comment with other deals you spotted in store - and will gladly add them to this list with credit to you. Also come back to this post at later points during the week to see what matchups have been added from our research and/or reader contributions. (Note: Giant matchups - also with 5 tripler coupons in-ad!! - to come tomorrow, likely, since this Shopper's deal had us occupied and started one day sooner...)

Please note that we have not had the greatest success with our Shopper's accepting printable coupons in the past, so if you plan on making a run with printable coupons, check first with your Shopper's location to ensure that they will be accepted.

Works for Me Wednesday: Using Amazon Shopping Lists for Free Super Saver Shipping Strategizing

It's Wednesday - time for another "Works for Me!" tip, inspired by the blog carnival/series at We are THAT Family. This week's carnival theme is getting the most from the holidays.

Amazon.com is generally a good thing for our budget - the Subscribe and Save, the frequent promos and coupon codes, the Gold Box deals, Friday sales, and the Free Super Saver Shipping all add up to a multitude of ways to combine savings for good.

One way that I find this useful is to keep a "shopping list" running on Amazon for future purchases. If I don't need something right away, I stow it on the shopping list (this also stems my instant gratification tendencies). At a later date, when I absolutely must buy something else based on a time limit (a relative's coming birthday, or a limited-time-offer like the Gold Box deals), I can look at my shopping list to come up with the cheapest possible item that will snag me the Free Super Saver Shipping by putting my total just over $25.

An example of how I did this recently: there was an irresistible Gold Box deal for a toy that I knew a little one in my life would love as a gift. It was temporarily marked from $29.26 down to $14.99 - and the quantity available at this price was going quickly.

After I added this toy to my cart, I skimmed my shopping list. I had a book on the list that has been there for a few months: Don't Panic: Dinner's in the Freezer!, a highly-rated cookbook written for those seeking shortcuts via premaking and freezing dinners. This book was listed at $10.19 - just enough to eke me over my $25 minimum and get free shipping on both the toy and the cookbook. I'm excited to see what I can learn from this book in terms of getting my freezer stocked with a few meals just in time for our second baby to arrive in December - hopefully saving us a little money along the way by making them with couponed ingredients.

By delaying gratification on non-essentials, you can remember to buy them later when you need to order something else immediately - and save yourself some money on shipping at Amazon.com.

What Amazon.com shopping and saving strategies work for you?

Frugal Fridays: Making Your Own Fancy Chai Latte - and Other Hot Drinks

This post is a part of the Frugal Fridays carnival, hosted by Life as Mom.

I know that making one's own fancy hot drinks is a strategy common to frugalistas near and far, but I think it's a habit that's only proliferating in the face of the current state of the economy. People are starting to measure the actual return on investment of $4 drinks, and wondering if they might not get a similar ROI with their own brews and concoctions at home. Even better, most find that they prefer their own drinks because of the ability to control flavor aspects and ingredients to their liking.

Which brings me to the homemade chai latte. Back in my college days, my student union introduced chai lattes, and at around $2/cup for the largest size, I was instantly hooked. Even though it initiallly had to be explained to me as "pumpkin pie in a cup", once I was in the chai-buying groove, I felt so hip and cosmopolitan - not to mention warm and sugar-sated.

But folks? Even $2 for a drink can add up quickly if it's a habit, and mine was quickly becoming one in my college's colder climate. Then one semester, my longtime roommate and chai-loving bosom buddy came back to school with a revelation. Over the break, a friend of hers had taught her how to make chai lattes from scratch at home. What's that? Chai whenever you want - in the comfort of your own dorm room? No cross-campus treks through the cold to spend money on chai? I was mesmerized as she laid out the method (posted here with her permission):

Ingredients for one homemade chai latte:
  • 1 bag plain black tea (you can use decaf black tea for a decaf chai latte!)
  • 1 mug full of milk
  • 6 or 7 cardamom pods, cracked open with any mortar/pestle type method (but not completely crushed)*
  • 3 or 4 whole cloves
  • 1 cinnamon stick (or ground cinnamon)
  • Sugar or Splenda to taste
*Note: I have found these at Whole Foods in a small package in the bulk dry foods section - several hundred pods for around $4.50. I'm willing to guess that they might also be found at Wegmans and international groceries in the area.

My chai master says:

Aficionados would demand that you cook the recipe on the stove, starting with slowly boiling the milk, tea, and sugar, then adding the cardamom pods, the cloves, and the cinnamon stick and simmering the mixture for about 10 minutes. They would also say that Splenda is a horrible product.

You can also dump everything into a mug and microwave it. [...which is exactly what we would do in our dorm rooms...with Splenda!]

OK, so we were not chai purists - but my roommate's recipe removed the aura of mystery from chai lattes - and to this day I see how far I can break down fancy drink concoctions by myself at home. Other ingredients I have been known to add to my homemade chai lattes:
  • Fresh sliced ginger
  • Ground ginger
  • Ground cardamom
  • Nutmeg
Note: one way to keep chai latte seasonings contained is to use a tea infuser (I got mine at IKEA for cheap). Make your drink hot with the black teabag, then add the other ingredients via tea infuser to brew - in other words, don't microwave a metal tea infuser. :) When you're done brewing and ready to drink, all you need to do is remove the teabag and the tea infuser!

If you're having a gathering of friends over and want to impress with fancy drink options, you're in luck! This is the time of year when hot drink mixes and ingredients are marked down for holiday sales - and coupons for them are everywhere. Here's what you need to host a barista gathering on the cheap (I put "couponed!" next to items for which I've seen coupons in the past):
  • Regular ol' coffee (couponed!)
  • Milk (lots)
  • Half and Half (lots)
  • Cans of whipped cream (couponed!)
  • Black tea (couponed!)
  • Cinnamon sticks/ground cinnamon
  • Cardamom pods
  • Cloves
  • Sugar (couponed!)
  • Honey (couponed!)
  • Artificial sweeteners, if desired (couponed!)
  • Flavored syrups (couponed!)
  • Hot chocolate mix (couponed!)
  • Bittersweet chocolate shavings and/or caramel syrup, to sprinkle/drizzle on the top of whipped cream drinks along with cinnamon
This assortment pretty much enables people to make their own coffee, tea, or hot chocolate, adding their dairy product and sweetener of choice, and topping with whipped cream and the aforementioned accoutrements like chocolate shavings and caramel syrup.

If you'd like to make flavored coffee to rival expensive flavored gourmet coffee, check out our classic post on making your own flavored coffee in your coffee pot at home.

Super Savings Saturday: Safeway and CVS

Here's a recap on some shopping deals this past week.

Safeway was running a sale on Wheat Thins and Triscuits for $1.38 a box last Saturday and Sunday. I made a quick run there to stock up on them in preparation for holiday entertaining to come. Using 5 $1/2 boxes coupons I paid just over $9 OOP, and I'll submit the receipt for the $10 rebate Nabisco is offering through 11/30/09. Score! 10 boxes with money in my pocket! Thanks for the tip, Moneywise Moms!

CVS
ran a 2/$4 deal on a variety of bags of fun size candy, so I went there on Tuesday to capitalize on that deal. I used 2 save $1/2 bags of M&M's MFCs, 2 $1/2 Campbell's Soup coupons, and one $.55 Reese's coupon and walked away from CVS with all this for just over $6. We typically have slews of trick-or-treaters, so I've been stockpiling for Saturday. And once every 2 months I drop off a bag of food at our church food pantry, so the soup will be perfect for that.

What deals have you scored this week?

Buyer Review: Purchasing Glasses Online

I wanted to share some positive experiences my family has had with buying glasses online. It took awhile (ok, a year!) for me to come around to this idea for myself, but last year at this time my husband decided to get a written prescription from our optometrist to try buying glasses off the internet. He was tired of paying upwards of $200 for glasses every other year when he wanted new frames, and he researched different glasses websites. He also wanted to buy prescription sunglasses, and they are expensive. The website he selected was 39dollarglasses.com. Since we have now purchased 3 pairs of glasses from there, I thought I'd write a buyer review.

The company claims to be "The World's #1 Online Optical Store" and has positive reviews on its homepage by Readers Digest and The Wall Street Journal. We're WSJ fans, but the price is what caught our attention more than anything. With 3 glasses/contacts wearers in the family, eye care adds up, and we were looking for ways to save. When each pair of glasses was shipped, they came in a fabric pouch placed in a hard black case in a padded mailing envelope.

I am totally won over now to buying glasses online, and here are a few reasons why.
(1) It's easy to view different types of glasses, and you can easily print a PDF file with the glasses shape and hold them up to yourself in a mirror. The website explains how to easily measure your eyes so you know which glasses fit. There is, of course, some risk involved for those who don't know what frame shapes work on their face shapes. I've worn glasses for most of my adult life, so I knew my limitations. If you don't know yours, I'd suggest trying some on at your optometrist when you visit for an exam. Or you could go to a department store that carries a wide selection of sunglasses and reading glasses and try different shapes on to see what works for you. Be creative!

(2) It's easy to enter prescription information. The paper prescription my optometrist gave me matched up exactly with the information needed to place the website order.

(3) It's quick! For my first order, I took my time to print about 4 different glasses frame shapes, look at myself in the mirror, have hubby verify my measurements, etc. Even still, it took me less than 30 minutes. Now that I've placed an order, it would take me less than 10 minutes to order again. Ordering glasses at an optometrist has typically taken 30-60 minutes for me. I appreciate saving time. And the shipping was quick! My glasses arrived only 4 days after I placed the order, via USPS. Can't beat that.

(4) It's affordable to have a few pairs of glasses if you want different styles, prescription sunglasses or just a second pair in case of damage to your favorite glasses. Our toddler wears glasses, and we have a backup pair for him because he is hard on his glasses every day. It's a low-cost way to make sure he is covered if we have to take his glasses in for repair.

(5) You can get money back through Ebates! I was pleasantly surprised to find a coupon code for $12 off my order if I went through Ebates?! Plus I'll get back an additional 4%. I paid $32 for a pair of beautiful glasses, then Ebates will return 4% to me. Wow!

The only downside we've experienced is that we're on our own when it comes to tune-ups or repairs. Our local optometrist who performs our exams has been very generous with replacing nosepieces, doing repairs, etc. for free, but some optometrists might not be so generous to customers who wear glasses that have not been purchased there. To us that risk is worth it; sometimes we're able to do our own repairs at home, and we wouldn't mind having to pay if it came to that. The cost would still be so much less than buying eyeglasses at a store!

Have you had any experiences buying eyeglasses online? Good or bad, please share them here.

Works for Me Wednesday: Baby Shampoo in Foaming Hand Soap Dispensers

It's Wednesday - time for another "Works for Me!" tip, inspired by the blog carnival/series at We are THAT Family. To see this week's Works for Me Wednesday tip carnival, click here.

Do you have a stash of baby shampoos in your closet? Last fall I ended up with bottle upon bottle of free-after-coupon Huggies shampoo. While it works well on my daughter's hair, I also had many bottles of L'Oreal Kids shampoo that we need to use, too.

I recently stumbled across a great use for mild baby shampoos like the Huggies formula or the Johnson & Johnson types. I had picked up a foaming-style kitchen soap at CVS with a freebie coupon that CVS had mailed me - I was sad to see it run out because I love that foamy texture.

On a whim, I filled the dispenser half-and-half with water and the Huggies shampoo (which is a thinner consistency anyway). After some shaking to mix, this pumps out beautiful fluffy puffs of foamed soap as though the shampoo came with the bottle. Bonus: the baby shampoo formulas are mild enough for baby's skin and often hypoallergenic, so washing your hands with a diluted version won't dry them out!

How do you save money on hand soap and hand soap refills?

Apple and Pomegranate Crisp, AKA the Antioxidant Special

So, today was the first time I'd ever cracked open a genuine pomegranate, while making "Brenda's Apple and Pomegranate Crisp". Let's say it's an adventure and a half getting those seeds out of there, though once you get the hang of it, it goes faster. Anybody have tips on that? (Edit: Wikipedia tells me that the fruit can be opened and seeded in a bowl of water, where the seeds sink and the to-be-discarded debris floats)

True confession: I have "issues" following recipes to the letter. This is, I believe, a hereditary condition stemming from my mother's side, where all of the cooks in the kitchen are convinced that they know just the right tweaks.

Now I'm working on it; when trying a highly-rated recipe for the first time, I try to stick as close to the original as I can manage, so that I have a baseline. The only differences that I did tonight was adding a dash of ground cardamom because ever since my college roommate showed me how to crack cardamom pods open to make homemade chai lattes, I've been a bit obsessed with the flavor. Oh, and I used a butter/canola oil spread that I had gotten for free (or close to it) with coupons - instead of plain butter, because I just don't happen to have butter around the house that much.

All things considered, it is a good thing that I planned an extra-light dinner of veggie sushi and salad, because this crisp is tartly, decadently awesome. The closest comparison I might make is homemade cranberry sauce, but this dessert has several more dimensions, especially when served with a garnish of Ben & Jerry's Cinnamon Buns ice cream. :o) Not that I would, uh, know that from first-hand experience or anything.

In any case, if you've never handled a pomegranate, this is a good recipe for rookies to try it out! Pomegranates and apples are both on sale at Giant this week.
