Works for Me Wednesday: Using Amazon Shopping Lists for Free Super Saver Shipping Strategizing

It's Wednesday - time for another "Works for Me!" tip, inspired by the blog carnival/series at We are THAT Family. This week's carnival theme is getting the most from the holidays.

Amazon.com is generally a good thing for our budget - the Subscribe and Save, the frequent promos and coupon codes, the Gold Box deals, Friday sales, and the Free Super Saver Shipping all add up to a multitude of ways to combine savings for good.

One way that I find this useful is to keep a "shopping list" running on Amazon for future purchases. If I don't need something right away, I stow it on the shopping list (this also stems my instant gratification tendencies). At a later date, when I absolutely must buy something else based on a time limit (a relative's coming birthday, or a limited-time-offer like the Gold Box deals), I can look at my shopping list to come up with the cheapest possible item that will snag me the Free Super Saver Shipping by putting my total just over $25.

An example of how I did this recently: there was an irresistible Gold Box deal for a toy that I knew a little one in my life would love as a gift. It was temporarily marked from $29.26 down to $14.99 - and the quantity available at this price was going quickly.

After I added this toy to my cart, I skimmed my shopping list. I had a book on the list that has been there for a few months: Don't Panic: Dinner's in the Freezer!, a highly-rated cookbook written for those seeking shortcuts via premaking and freezing dinners. This book was listed at $10.19 - just enough to eke me over my $25 minimum and get free shipping on both the toy and the cookbook. I'm excited to see what I can learn from this book in terms of getting my freezer stocked with a few meals just in time for our second baby to arrive in December - hopefully saving us a little money along the way by making them with couponed ingredients.

By delaying gratification on non-essentials, you can remember to buy them later when you need to order something else immediately - and save yourself some money on shipping at Amazon.com.

I love this idea! Reading this made me wonder why I never thought of it, lol. Each time I order from Amazon, I always push it over the $25 mark, but sometimes I end up spending an hour looking for something that costs the appropriate amount of money, and is something that I actually have a use for. Thanks!
