Works for Me Wednesday: Tea Boxes as Cookie Gifting Containers

This idea is not at all mine originally, but it is one that I love and intend to use again and again. When you're gifting cookies, instead of putting them on a wrapped plate (kind of precarious) or in a Ziploc gallon bag (makes them liable to crumble) - both things I used to do - you should consider the Post Punk Kitchen suggestion (described here and linked with PPK's permission) of putting them in an empty tea box. Frugal and cute as can be.

The Post Punk Kitchen blog has some great-looking cookie recipes, too, like Mexican Hot Chocolate Snickerdoodles, Peanut Butter Chocolate Pillows (*drool*), and Magical Coconut Cookie Bars.

For additional inspiration, you could also head over to Amazon for the 5-star-reviewed Vegan Cookies Invade Your Cookie Jar: 100 Dairy-Free Recipes for Everyone's Favorite Treats, written by the Post Punk Kitchen's Isa Chandra Moskowitz and Terry Hope Romero (meet'em here).

Other suggestions for snazzing up your tea box of cookies:
  • Per Post Punk Kitchen, add some bags of tea that would complement the taste of the cookie
  • I like separating mine with squares of wax paper.
  • You could fancy up your boxes with wrapping paper or ribbons on the outside!
Gifting yummy cookies in tea boxes works for me!

Works for Me Wednesday: Free Podcasts

It's Wednesday again - time for another "Works for Me!" tip, inspired by the blog carnival/series at We Are THAT Family. Check out We Are THAT Family's Wednesday tip (and others' Mr. Linky'ed tips) here.

I frequently listen to free podcasts while getting some of my chores done - laundry folding, dishwasher loading, etc. What I play depends on my mood - but freebie laughs and encouragement (plus hearing adult voices) can propel me through my tasks so much more sanely than if I try to do them sans podcasts.

If you have iTunes on your computer, you can do a search and check out the following podcasts for free (and check out past weeks' podcasts!). Note that while the majority of the following shows' content is generally family-friendly, it is always wise to check the subject matter of each week's show before playing with little ones around.

The Boundless Show. (Generally aimed at 20- and 30-somethings; also can listen straight from the website here). Hostess Lisa Anderson's self-deprecating sense of humor is just one of the reasons I tune in every week. Updated on Thursdays.

Car Talk. This classic radio show - hosted by brothers (and old school mechanics) Tom and Ray Magliozzi. These guys cover their callers' car mysteries, sure, but half the fun of the show is the weekly Puzzler, and especially the brothers' busting chops on each other. Click here for info. Updated on Saturdays.

Family Life Today.
Family Life is "a Christian organization helping couples build healthier marriages and families." The collective wisdom and experience with marriage and parenting is astounding and very encouraging on this show. Click here for info on getting the podcasts.

A Prairie Home Companion's News from Lake Wobegon. In this excerpt from Garrison Keillor's weekly radio show, Mr. Keillor wryly spins some tall tales about his hometown - "Where the women are strong, the men are good-looking, and the children are above average." Click here for info on the podcasts. Updated Mondays.

One for post-kiddie bedtime:

The Moth.
One of our husbands stumbled on this one, and we like to listen to it during adults-only time. The Moth is a non-profit storytelling organization. The podcasts feature "true stories from the storytellers' lives and they must be told live, without notes." Most are captivating, but some involve language inappropriate for children. Click here for The Moth podcasts.

Do you listen to any free podcasts? Which ones make you laugh, encourage you, uplift you, and generally inspire? Post a comment!

FREE Nakano Rice Vinegar, up to $4 in Value

Freebies4Mom covers just about every freebie known to man - we highly recommend checking out the site for info on free samples, freebie coupons, restaurant freebies, and so on.

This particular freebie for a bottle of regular or seasoned Nakano Rice Vinegar caught my attention because I occasionally (attempt to) make homemade sushi in a bid to save money over restaurant or grocery store sushi. Rice vinegar is a nonnegotiable when making sushi, so a free $4 bottle gives you that much more of a savings over getting sushi elsewhere, since rice vinegar and nori (the seaweed sheets, available at Shopper's, Safeway, or Asian and international grocery stores) are the two foundational ingredients that cost the most. Bonus: the nori is quite nutritious, being high in both Vitamin A and Vitamin C.

Go here for some starter ideas on sushi recipes. I love mine with avocado and cucumber...mmm!

Go here for starter ideas on any recipes involving rice vinegar - which, as Freebies4Mom so rightly mentioned, makes a great dressing base.

New York Times Piece: Credit Card Industry Aims to Profit From Sterling Payers

Go and read this article. Apparently with new credit card legislation/regulation at play, credit card companies won't be able to make their biggest profits (was 70% of their revenue streams) from delinquent payers the same way that they have in the past. What does this mean? The perks programs - no annual fees, rewards and cash-back programs, etc. - are likely to evaporate since the only other sources of income would be sterling payers: people who faithfully pay their bill in full every month.

If you are a perfect credit card payer (and you should try to be, because otherwise it's money down the drain on fees and interest) - it's probably best to monitor your card's interest rate and the other fine print. Before you know it, a long-loved rewards program could silently cease (save only the teeny tiny notification at the bottom of one of your bills), or an annual fee could start on your account. Definitely budgeting considerations! And for fun, check out Crystal Paine's post today on making a mosaic frame out of cut-up credit cards - so cute!

Roundup: Some Recent Worthwhile Reads

For fun and info, here are some articles that pinged our radars this week:

Five Frugal Food Tactics from Trent's Kitchen - includes a recipe for make-your-own cream of soup. Nice! Thanks to A Simple Dollar's Trent for these sweet tips. Trent also did a great post which serves up the a choice reason to seek frugality: the more frugal you are (that is, the more you pursue it as a lifestyle), the more you can afford to take on a job that really delights you, instead of one that drags you down.

Gina's post alerted us to Mindi's Coupon Ethics - Why Stores Don't Trust Us - which came with a follow-up Coupon Ethics: Coupon BarCode Decoding. We had no idea that there were so many ways to cheat/fraud the system - which definitely helps to explain the occasional surly attitude you can run into while couponing. More incentive to respect print limits, honor coupons' stated terms, and remain ever friendly and honest in your coupon dealings - do it for yourself and your fellow couponers! Many thanks to Mindi for putting major points in this hot-button issue all in one spot.

Ginger of Attention Target Shoppers did a post on the "Recycle Bank" - recently featured on Oprah - in which recyclers can accumulate credit for shopping at participating Target locations! Wish there was a participating location closer to us, but maybe in the future...(Thanks so much, Ginger!)

Finally, Ginger also covered Huggies' New Enjoy the Ride program, and included info on $2 Huggies coupons and codes to redeem in the program for points.

Wow! Live Large, Spend Less just gave us our very first blog award - the Attitude of Gratitude Award! Did a Near-Freebie Run at WalMart for Fun!

I did a freebies-at-WalMart run to see what I could find. I scooped up 4 Kraft salad dressings, and 8 2-packs of Olay shea butter soap - around $26.16 worth of stuff, for $5.31 ($1.15 tax included). This was a productive run for me because (gasp!) we were actually down to our last bar of soap. Perish the thought that a CVSer should run out of toiletries! lol The only setback was discovering that my WalMart doesn't accept Internet coupons (I had tried Crystal's proposed free Glucerna cereal deal).*

If you try a WalMart freebie trip, here are some of the deals worth seeking during a shopping trip:

  • $0.08 Kraft salad dressing
  • $0.48 2-packs of shea butter Olay bar soaps (yes, Crystal's post said FREE, but in NOVA WalMarts the two-packs appear to be priced at $2.48. $0.24/bar still ain't shabby, though, especially compared with $1.24/bar retail)
  • FREE McCormick seasonings
  • FREE (potentially) Seventh Generation baby wipes
I heard about all of these deals through Crystal Paine's Money Saving Mom. See all of Money Saving Mom's posts on Wal-Mart steals (including matchups for the above listed freebies) here. Many printable coupon matchups, too!

No Nonsense Pantyhose are a free rolling promo, as well. The package has a coupon, so use your $1 off coupon from the insert (Crystal has the details.) to buy pantyhose whose packages come with $1 coupons.

Crystal also mentions in her recent WalMart deals that WalMart carries $1 VitaminWater, so the 04/05 $1 coupon will make it free. I will be saving these $1 coupons to use at Giant, where VitaminWater is on sale for $1 each this week - because it's good 'filler' to get my transaction up to $15 in order to use a doubler coupon for a different item.

And later, when I'm on the computer:

*What is going on lately with stores rejecting Internet coupons? I don't think that Internet coupons will be going away, so it will be interesting to see what the future holds. I do know that stores that do accept Internet coupons invariably get more business from me than they would otherwise.

$7.95 TOTAL (shipping included) for $32-valued Nursing Cover from Udder Covers

Baby Cheapskate just blew the lid on an AWESOME deal. Thanks, Baby Cheapskate!

*Ahem* While the name ain't exactly compelling (or maybe that's just me...), this is a bargain price for a nursing cover. Nursing covers start at $8.49 plus shipping on Amazon, for a quick comparison. From the pics and descriptions, they have a little reinforcement at the mom's neck area that pitches the cover just a little bit outward so that mom can make eye contact with baby.

Quaker True Delights Granola Bars - $0.60/box after Target gift card rolling!

Crystal Paine of the epic Mommy Saving Money recently mentioned in a post that Quaker products are buy 5, get a $5 Target Gift Card at Target this week.

Since I had nine of the January Red Plum / Valassis insert coupons for $1 off Quaker True Delights (flavors: cashew something, banana coconut macadamia nut, and raspberry dark chocolate), this is how I worked it:

Bought 5 x $2.50
Used 5 x $1 off coupons
================
$7.50 + tax

I spent a $5 gift card that I already had, and the transaction generated a $5 gift card.

Bought 5 x $2.50
Used 4 x $1 off coupons
================
$8.50 + tax

I used the $5 gift card from the first transaction, and the transaction generated another $5 gift card. Don't you love it when cashiers are so willing to work with you on stuff like this? :)

So: net out of pocket input was $6 + tax for 10 five-count boxes of these granola bars ($0.12/bar pretax). And I have a $5 Target gift card from the second transaction!

It's scenarios like this when your coupons bring expensive prepackaged stuff down to the prices of what you would pay to make the item yourselves.

Don't have the Red Plum coupons? Print the $1 off Quaker True Delights coupons here (limit 2 per Windows-run computer, I'm guessing). Or, check out the sweet homemade granola bar tutorial by the fabulous Liz of Frugally Blonde, bringing your (HUGE :-p) homemade bars down to just $0.13/bar!

5 Reasons to go to CVS This Week, 03/08-03/14

For the rest of this week's CVS coupon matchups, we recommend Erica at I Heart CVS and her weekly deal coverage. Thanks, Erica, for the tips!
  • Crest Pro-Health 4.2 oz. is $2.99, Get $2 ExtraCare Bucks (ECBs).
    Limit 1
Use the $1 off coupon for Crest Weekly Clean or other 4.2 oz.+ paste or liquid gel from the P&G 02/08 insert to make the toothpaste free after ExtraCare Bucks (FAECBs), or the $.75 off coupon for Crest 4.2oz + Paste or Liquid Gel (P&G 3/1/09) to make the toothpaste cost $0.24.
  • Zone perfect bars are 10/$10, so $1 each.
Use the coupon for $1 off Zone Perfect, 1 single bar or 1 Multi-count box (includes 8 ct. snack size) from the 03/01 SS insert to make the bars FREE!
There is also the $3 off 4 Zone Perfect (sign up here, then go here for coupon) or the $1 off 2 Zone perfect (sign up here, then go here for coupon).
  • General Mills cereal and Nature Valley Granola Bars are 3/$10, and you earn $5 ECBs back when you buy 3.
There was a coupon for $1 off purchase of 3 General Mills cereals from the 02/08 GM insert, and a coupon for $0.50 off Nature Valley Granola Bars from the 03/08 SS insert.
Best scenario: Use 3 Nature Valley coupons to buy 3 boxes for $9.50, 'net' $4.50 after ECBs. Cereal: Use the $1 coupon to pay $9.00 - net $4 after ECBs. $1.33/box for cereal isn't bad, but Gina at Mommy Making Money has a $0.29/box deal for cereal figured out this week at Safeway! Go, Gina!
  • Herbal Essences Shampoos and Conditioners are $2.88, limit 6.
Since Herbal Essences Hydralicicous rewards $1 ECB (part of the CVS March ECB deals), and there was a $3 off 2 coupon in the 02/08 P&G, the 'net' per bottle could be $0.38.
  • 10 oz. Vaseline body lotion is $3.69, and you earn back $2 ECBs. Here are applicable coupons (the best deal being the $1.50 off - making it just $0.19 after ECBs!):
$1.50 off Vaseline Intensive Rescue or Clinical Therapy, any Valassis/Red Plum 01/18 insert. Final cost: $0.19.
$1.25 off Vaseline Lotion Product, 200 ml+ except Renewal or Glow 03/01 Valassis/Red Plum. Final cost: $0.44.
$1.25 off Vaseline Cocoa Butter Product, any 03/01 Valassis/Red Plum. Final cost: $0.44.
$1 off Vaseline lotion 10-24.5 oz printable. Final cost: $0.69.
$.55 off Vaseline Lotion , any 200 ml or larger except Renewal or Glow Valassis/Red Plum 01/18. Final cost: $1.14.

Frugal Sewing: Easy Bandana Pants

Last summer, a friend of mine alerted me to the existence of a delightful blog post laying out very detailed pics and instructions for sewing a simple pair of pants consisting of two bandanas - good for toddlers up to small children! They wear like pants, then capris, then shorts, as a child grows, but the design is so simple that they are truly one size fits all, and are great coverups for poolside adventures. The dollar section of Target had bandanas in whimsical prints for $1 each last summer, so with elastic and 2 bandanas, you are talking around $2.50 for a pair of pants. Far less if you recycle fabric by cutting it into bandana sized squares or use bandanas bought on clearance! (Talk to a scout leader who just came back from camp...bet you dollars to doughtnuts he/she has a few spare pair.)

As a child, I actually steam-ironed my fingers in sewing class trying to iron the simple draw-string bag I had sewn. Needless to say, I will probably not be saving our family money making wardrobes full of custom-sewn clothing, but even sewing dopes like me can tackle this bandana pants pattern. I was so proud of the pair I did in classic red bandana print!
Photo tutorial here.

I am sure that this would be a great intermediate pattern, too, for working with older children who already have sewing experience under their belts (iron at your own risk ;-p).

Thanks so much, Stefani of Blue Yonder, for posting this creative (and very frugality-friendly) sewing project!

Frugal Coupon Mom recenlty posted some free coupon rental codes for Red Box kiosks. If you haven't seen these, they are pretty much like neat little DVD vending machines, which rent DVDs for $1/night (which is pretty cheap anyway).

Here's one that FCM just posted good for only tonight (03/02/09):
