Works for Me Wednesday: Cleaning Crocs

A friend told me a few years ago that
she cleans her family's Crocs in the dishwasher all the time.

I always thought it was an odd idea until my son started wearing Crocs. That means 2 of the 3 of us wear them most days of the week, at least around the house. I quickly decided to try the dishwasher tactic last year. Success!

I've tried top rack placement in our regular dishwasher cycle and been pleased with the results. It's easy, it keeps me from scrubbing mud off, and it's super clean. At first I was concerned about getting mud on our dishes, but the high temperature of the dishwasher seems to get rid of it, further putting my concerns about germs to rest...

Try it sometime! Works for me!

Tuesday Deals Roundup: My Inbox

Here's a sampling of some deals that have hit my inbox recently:
  • Through Wednesday at midnight, shop stila.com with the coupon code JEWEL to get free shipping on any purchase. Free samples come with your order, too!

  • Tomorrow (Wednesday), at Toys"R"Us stores, get My Little Pony playsets and ponies BOGO, or save 25% on lawn games (croquet, etc.) with this coupon.

  • This is really only a worthwhile deal if a) you've needed a wardrobe overhaul for some time, and b) you are a BIG fan of JCrew, and c) you know with a high degree of confidence what your JCrew size is (since all sales on final sale are final). Through April 1, use code EXTRA30 at checkout to get free shipping on all orders of $150 or more and an extra 30% off final sale items. The $150 minimum is AFTER the 30% discount, so to score both, you must essentially buy $225 worth of stuff (minus $75, equals $150). Which, at JCrew, is like, 3 pair of socks. ;o) Get a measly 1% cash back when you click through to the JCrew website via eBates. (But, $1.50 is a $1.50...)

  • At Yankee Candle, large jar candles are Buy 2, Get 1 Free through April 18. Use code XF003A5 to get the promo online ($5 flat rate shipping), or print the in-store coupon here.

DIY: Safari Themed Baby Shower

Some friends and I threw a baby shower for another friend in our bible study last weekend. She & her husband have chosen a "Cottontales Paradise" theme for baby's nursery, so we went with the safari animal theme for her shower. For this week's "Do it Yourself" day over at A Soft Place to Land, I'm including some pictures from our celebration.

We had a lot of fun with it! If you've been reading here for any amount of time, you know that I(Mel) am a baker. I enjoy baking for others, especially when it comes to special occasions. And with my career in event planning, I especially love to host and throw parties.
One of the co-hostesses made the. most. amazing. diaper cake. ever. Don't you agree?

Another brought decorations and paper goods. Others contributed delicious food.

One of the guests was super creative with her bathtub themed gift,
involving her 4-year-old in the wrapping.

And as you can see from the first picture, I went a little overboard baking 2 cakes and dozens of sugar cookies. I'll be posting more information and the full description of what I baked at a new blog I've started with baking buddies. Stay tuned!

I really enjoyed meeting a faithful RU reader and showering our mutual friend. Blessings, J & T!

IHOP - Kids eat FREE every day in April, 4-10 p.m.

I just saw a very exciting ad on TV. IHOP is willing to feed your younguns free dinner every night in April!

This is why I LOVE my DVR!

With the screen paused, the fine print read:

Receive one free kid's meal with each adult entree purchase. Offer valid on "Just for Kids" menu items only. For a limited time at participating restaurants.

Needless to say, this is a great way to snag some cheap eats, especially in scenarios (feeding visiting family, post-sports-practice dinners) when you need to feed a bunch of kids cheaply and quickly. Just remember to tip your hard-working server based on the would-have-been value of your check.

Find your local IHOP location here - and remember to call ahead to make sure that your location is participating!

Menu Plan Monday - Roasted Wasabi Asparagus!

With my daytimes being so intense/unpredictable lately due to a very hungry/cuddly baby, I'm trying to devise a menu based on non-specific baking/cooking times, or items able to be mostly preassembled the night before.

But: Asparagus is cheap ($1.69/lb.) at Giant this week! Anybody who's been following this blog for a while knows what an asparagus fanatic I (A.) am. Truly, my family's less-maniacal (yet amicable) feelings for it is the only reason I don't serve it every lunch and dinner while it's in season. :) In honor of Spring 2010 Asparagus Season, I've included my roasted wasabi asparagus recipe below.

Other Giant sale items making it into this week's menu plan: $1.66/lb. strawberries and Cracker Barrel cheese.

Monday:
Breakfast: Oatmeal with raisins, milk - had thawed some chocolate chip pumpkin bread yesterday, so that was breakfast with banana!
Lunch: Spinach salad with papaya, cheddar, avocado, ranch
Dinner: Baked potatoes with toppings, wasabi asparagus

Tuesday:
Breakfast: Maple sausage, microwave "fried" eggs, milk
Lunch: Banana peanut butter smoothies, Trader Joe's Jaipur Vegetables
Dinner: Spinach salad with (made ahead) antipasto salad: couponed Hormel pepperoni, mozzarella, tomatoes, balsamic vinaigrette

Wednesday:
Breakfast: Mango crumble (made ahead with couponed Dole frozen mango chunks), milk
Lunch: Spinach omelettes, sliced apples
Dinner: Garlic ginger shrimp and broccoli

Thursday:
Breakfast: Strawberries (on sale at Giant) and bananas, slices of Cracker Barrel cheese (also on sale at Giant), milk
Lunch: Tuna salad (made ahead) on spinach salad with tomatoes
Dinner: Crock pot chicken with carrots, leeks

Friday:
Breakfast: Crustless quiche (made ahead), banana, milk
Lunch: Miso (broth made ahead) with spring onions, tofu, and brown rice
Dinner: BLT shrimp salad, strawberries

***

Roasted Wasabi Asparagus:

In a 1 gallon zip bag, mix:
Generous amounts of: Wasabi paste
(Wasabi paste is sold in Asian section of your grocery store, Target, or WalMart, or Asian grocery stores - 1 tbsp. gives a vague taste, 2 tbsps. a bit of kick, 3 tbsps. considerable heat, 4 tbsps.+ = five-alarm-clear-your-sinuses)
Non-flavored oil (extra light virgin olive oil, safflower oil, etc.)

Small amounts of:
Ground ginger
Salt
Pepper
Sugar (if you like your heat bolstered with a bit of sweet)

The ratios here depend on your desired effect, but you should end up with a generous amount of marinade, a thinned out green paste. Cut 1-2 lbs. asparagus stalks into thirds, and then place pieces into gallon bag of marinade. Shake well to coat evenly. Place on foil-lined sheet and put in oven or toaster oven at 450 F for 13 minutes (this is for tender-crisp just barely blistered on the outside texture).

Super Savings Saturday: Triple Coupons at Harris Teeter!

Both A. and I have been in survival mode this week with husbands out of town. It was my second back-to-back week of my husband being out of town, and boy are we glad to have him home!

I also got to experience my quarterly migraine, and I don't remember much about Wednesday because of it! I've been thanking God for produce in the fridge and easy-to-prepare options in the freezer this week because cooking just wasn't happening between lack of sleep and migraine world. If you've ever had one, you'll understand what I'm sayin' when I say that I go to a different place when I have one! I'll call it Migraine World.

I did have some time Thursday morning to scout out the triple coupon deals at Harris Teeter. A new one opened up in Fairfax (Pender Village), so I've decided to try to familiarize myself with the store. The mid-morning customer service was fantastic since I needed to sign up for a VIC card and ask a couple of other questions.

Thanks to Moneywise Moms, I went with a few additional printed coupons in hand, only to find that my HT location doesn't sell Ronzoni pasta. Alas! I spent $2.53 for over $18 worth of groceries. The cashier said "Wow!" after scanning all my coupons. Can't beat that!

Works for Me Wednesday: Google Reader

It's Wednesday, and that means it's time for another "Works for Me Wednesday" tip, as hosted by the blog carnival at We Are THAT Family. See this week's Works for Me Wednesday here.

Both A. and I would agree that computer applications available through Google are invaluable! We'd like to highlight Google Reader today because it saves us SO. MUCH. TIME.

Google Reader uses RSS feeds to check websites and save them in one place. It's like having another email account, only it tracks information from websites. For example, you can view the posts we write at Redemption Unlimited in Google Reader. We keep up with other deals blogs, personal friends and family blogs, news blogs, etc. It's a great tool, and it truly saves tons of time.

Yahoo offers a similar service, so if you already use Yahoo for email you might want to try Yahoo Reader.

To become a Google Reader user you must have a Gmail account. If you'd like to start one, send us an email at redemptionunlimited(at)gmail(dot)com. You can add Redemption Unlimited to your Google Reader subscription list by clicking on "Add Subscription" in the upper left hand corner and typing http://www.redemptionunlimited.blogspot.com into the field. Voila!!

Did you know that when you "follow" us via Google Reader, you also have the option of seeing items that we share from other blogs (which also appears lower on our blog page in the right-hand column)? We think that this is a great way for you to get to know other bloggers we follow and admire - who you might like adding to your Google Reader subscription list as well!

Google Reader works for us!

Price Drop: Organic Mother's Milk Tea on Amazon.com

WOW - I just noticed on my Amazon account that the price of Organic Mother's Milk Tea has dropped by a huge amount! When I bought this breastmilk-supply-enhancing tea back in November via Amazon Subscribe and Save, my subscription price for 6 boxes was over $21. Now, thanks to the alert from Amazon, I saw that it's priced at $18.59 retail, $15.80 (and ships free!) when you do it via Subscribe & Save - $6 less than what I paid in November!

$2.63 for a box of tea isn't usually a price I'd qualify as cheap, but for this particular tea, which has helped me through some milk supply tight spots in the past, it's a bargain! (Also, it usually retails at more than $4 in grocery stores if you can manage to find it.)

Even if you're not a nursing mother, if you know someone who's expecting and planning on breastfeeding, a box of this tea (or all 6 boxes!) could be part of a unique baby shower gift. For example, you could pair the tea with some Lansinoh nursing pads ($6.11/box with Subscribe and Save, the cheapest I've seen them anywhere online or in-store).

It's Friday: Earn Mega Swag Bucks today!

Search & WinEvery Friday is Mega Swag Bucks Day!

Never heard of Swagbucks? It's one of our favorite websites because it's easy to earn free prizes by using the Swagbucks search engine. And on Fridays, users have better chances of winning Mega Swagbucks denominations.

The way it works:

  • Go to Swagbucks through our referral link by clicking here.
  • Sign up and create a new profile for yourself.
  • Search a few times a day, and you'll start seeing points accumulate.
I use Swagbucks to search 2-3 times a day, 3-4 days a week for things I would normally research. I usually cash out my Swagbucks for Starbucks gift cards, but there are lots of other cool prizes in the Swagbucks store.

As a disclaimer, if you sign up under our referral link, we will receive Swagbucks thanks to you.

5 Reasons to Visit Giant This Week, 03/19-03/25

I'm going to keep this week's Giant deals simple in order to focus on the generally deeper, more time-constrained set of discounts available by shopping Shopper's Food Warehouse double and triple coupons this weekened, March 18 through March 21. If I catch other Giant deals later in the week, they will be added to this post.
  1. The $10/$20 General Mills Catalina Deal. Gina already covered this quite nicely, so we will direct you to her post for the details/matchups for the hot Catalina deal good through 03/25 (listed on this week's Giant ad's back page). She also blogged that retail prices count toward the $20 threshold, so that makes the deal that much sweeter (see her Giant runs here!)! If you want an easy scenario, just buy 10 5-lb. bags of all-purposes regular or unbleached Gold Medal Flour (no coupons currently available, though earlier this month there were some on coupons.com). With the $10 Catalina, you'll be paying a net of $1/bag, which is pretty cheap! (If you think this is too much for you to store, consider going in with one or two friends to get the price.)

For reference, a 25-lb. bag of all-purpose flour costs around $6.75 at the Woodbridge Sam's Club, so in this simple scenario, you could get 5x5-lb. = 25 lb. of flour which would cost you $5 net.

  2. The $3/$15 Nature's Promise Catalina deal is back ON. Buy $15 worth of Nature's Promise products, and you'll receive a $3 Catalina back. As I theorized, this deal is "rollable", but only if you are willing to go to Customer Service. In other words, if you have a transaction consisting only of at least $15 of Nature's Promise products, and you apply a Catalina that you already have to it, this will bring the total under $15, and the computer will not recognize it. BUT, as Customer Service did for me, you can go to the Customer Service counter and point out your items totalling $15 and get your $3 back (I received cash; your situation may be different...). If you buy $15 of NP products and at least $3 of something else, though, the deal will likely go through at checkout.

  3. London Broil or Chuck Steak or Roast, $1.99/lb. This is about as cheap as it gets for crock-pottable beef (excepting the annual Corned-Beef-a-Thon).

  4. Cheap Produce. Tomatoes on the Vine, bagged Giant European Salads, Dole Salad Blends, and Blackberries are all $1.88.

  5. General Mills Cereal, 2/$4. This includes Cocoa Puffs, Trix, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Lucky Charms, or Cinnamon Chex.
    $1/2 GM cereals
    Final price: $1.50/box
OK, admittedly I thought I'd dig up some sweeter coupons for this, like the usual roundup of $0.55/1 and $0.75/1 printables from coupons.com and the Betty Crocker and Pillsbury websites - anybody have any tips on relevant and active GM coupons?

Shopper's Food Warehouse Double/Triple Coupons Master Matchups List

OK, Ladies and Gents, here's the deal:

March 18 - March 21, many regional Shopper's locations are doing double and triple coupons.

Coupons valued at $0.00-$0.50 triple, and coupons valued at $0.51-$1.00 double.

Limit 4 identical coupons per transaction.

Gina asked a great question in a comment: In essence, what does "Up to $1.00" mean - are $1-valued coupons included? I say very likely - as the Shopper's Food Warehouse everyday coupon-doubling policy says "SHOPPERS will double the value of valid manufacturers’ coupons with a face-value of up to 99¢ (example: 25¢ = 50¢, 50¢ = $1.00, 75¢ = $1.50.) Valid manufacturers’ coupons with a face-value of $1.00 or greater will be redeemed at face-value only (example: $1.00 = $1.00, $1.50 = $1.50, $2.00 = $2.00.)" Ergo "up to $1.00" should include $1.00-valued coupons, non?

Note that the Internet coupon policy has been clarified to read: "SHOPPERS will accept valid manufacturers’ coupons obtained from the internet with a face-value up to $1.00. Internet coupons with a face value of $1.01 or above or FREE offers will not be accepted."

Come back to this master matchups post to see this master list of matchups grow over the next couple of days. Reader emails/comments with matchups will be added to this list, so let us know of your hot finds!

I'll start with the Shopper's Ad listings, with priority given to freebies and "cheapies" (~$0.50 or less). In other words, I won't be prioritizing items like a $0.30 coupon for a $7 jug of detergent given the time constraints. Expect a freebies and cheapies summary post late Saturday or early Sunday so that you can do a last blitz or two before the doubling and tripling ends.

Reader Jenny emailed us these cheapers after her trip to the Olney Shopper's (thanks!!):

The Betty Crocker frosting is indeed $1.69, so with a .50 coupon tripled was .19.

I also got Marcal napkins ($2.39)--with a $1.00 coupon doubled, the price was .39.

Polaner All Fruit is $2.39, so with my $1.00 coupon, it was only .39.

I got Mission tortillas ($2.19) for .19 with my $1.00 coupon.

Also, Promise buttery spread was $2.69, making it .69 with a $1.00 coupon.

I bought Eggland's eggs ($2.99) for 1.49 with my tripled .50 coupon.

Gina of Moneywise Moms documented her trip, and with her permission (thanks, Gina!) we excerpt her matchups:
  • Dole Canned Pineapple was $1.00/can, so I used a $1.00/3 coupon (1/24) which doubled, making them only .33 each.
  • Reach Dental Floss was $1.50, so the doubled $1.00 off coupon (3/7) made it FREE.
  • Scotch Brite Sponges were $1.09 each, and I had a $1.00/2 coupon (3/7) which doubled, making them only .09 each.
  • Act II Microwave Popcorn was marked for clearance at $1.45, so the .40 off coupon (2/28) tripled, making it only .25.
  • Reese's Dark Chocolate was .79, so the .55 off coupon (3/14) made it FREE.
  • Crest Kids' Toothbrush was $2.50, so with the doubled $1.00 off coupon (2/7), it was .50.
  • Oral-B Stages Toothpaste was $2.49, so the doubled $1.00 off coupon (2/7) made it .49.
  • Sure Deodorant was marked for clearance at $2.20, so the doubled $1.00 off coupon (2/28) made it .20.
  • Dixie Napkins were $2.99 and I had $1.00/2 coupons (1/24), not fantastic but a lot less expensive than usual. Plus, I can get $5 back via mail-in rebate when I buy $20 of participating Georgia-Pacific products.

Works for Me Wednesday: Banana Bread Shortcut

This is kind of a silly Works for Me Wednesday tip because it's so simple, but for me, it has turned banana bread from a chore to a quick and easy pleasure.

When it comes to getting mashed bananas, I used to mash mine in a bowl with a fork. It took forever to get even the ripest bananas to a consistency that was good enough for a decent loaf of banana bread.

Then one day it dawned on me - I tried gently massaging each banana while it was still contained in its spotty brown skin, and once I opened the banana, 90% of the mashing was already done, and to a much smoother consistency, with so much less effort. I could just squeeze out the nicely-mashed banana like toothpaste from a tube.

Now I look forward to bananas browning on my counter so I can painlessly bust out loaf or two of banana bread. :)

Mashing the banana bread bananas "in skin" works for me! What are your banana bread tips?

Along the road this morning I noticed a new set of consignment sale signs! 'Tis the season.

This one is hosted by the Burke United Methodist Church Preschool (BUMP) this Saturday. We haven't been to this one but wanted to be sure to post the information. I've had trouble finding much info on the web, but here is what is available:

Safeway Report-out: Cheap cereal and snacks!

Thanks to Moneywise Moms, I checked out the Safeway sale this weekend.

Here's what I scored based on Gina's scenario:
5 boxes of cereal, using this coupon and a few other recent MFC's
1 bag Nature Valley Nut Clusters, using this $1.00 printable
2 boxes Nature Valley Granola Bars, using MFC coupons
2 boxes Fruit Roll-ups, using MFC coupons
Total OOP: $5.37

It was fun to watch the register go from $33, taking 2 $5 off 5 amounts off for the Safeway sale, then subtract doubled MFC's and Cellfire/Shortcut coupons. The cashier said, "Wow!" and I responded, "that's why I'm here with my coupons!"

Now if I can just get to Target for another cereal sale, we'll have enough cereal for the year?!

Save 30% With Coupon from Gap Friends and Family Sale, March 18-21, 2010

SWEET CABLED CARDIGANS, the Gap Friends and Family 30% off coupon is BACK. This puppy only comes out twice each year or so, so the time to jump on it is this weekend, March 18-21 (that's Thursday through Sunday). Get 30% off your entire purchase at Gap, Gap Outlet, Gap Factory Store, The Gap Generation, Banana Republic, Banana Republic Factory Store and Old Navy. (*Happy dancing!!!*)

I love this coupon with a passion because - at Gap Outlets - you can often score some huge discounts if you're buying judiciously - as in, from the clearance racks. I've gotten adult jeans, polarfleeces, and other staples for well under $15 in the past. And don't even get me started on the cheap, cute kids' clothes. :) The coupon is also good at Banana Republic outlets!

Note: The above is a multiuse unlimited in-store coupon, but this one will probably also work. Thanks, Birmingham Bargain Mom!

Menu Plan Monday

We had my parents down this weekend for corned beef with vegetables from the crock pot.

And yes, that's the second weekend in a row since my in-laws dined on it with us the weekend before...but what can I say?

Corned beef - on sale at Giant this week! - is the cheapest, easiest, most crowd-pleasing dish in my repertoire. It's like the bacon of beef! It also kind of makes me want to load up on the fiber the rest of the week.

Monday:
Breakfast: Banana bread, apple slices, milk
Lunch: Romaine salad, balsamic vinaigrette, shredded mozzarella, Valdosta nut mix
Dinner: Breakfast casserole, blueberry smoothies

Tuesday:
Breakfast: Microwave-fried eggs with lime juice and salt, bananas, milk
Lunch: Vegetable soup with crackers (aka free-with-coupon Matzo!)
Dinner: Summer rolls stuffed with shrimp, brocolli slaw, cilantro, and sesame dressing

Wednesday:
Breakfast: Instant oatmeal, bananas, milk
Lunch: TJ's Jaipur Vegetables, brown rice
Dinner: Baked chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, salad

Thursday:
Breakfast: Chocolate chip pumpkin bread (thawed from last baking day), milk
Lunch: Salad with leftover baked chicken, ranch dressing
Dinner: Pasta bolognese, salad

Friday:
Breakfast: Bacon and cheddar rolls, mango smoothies
Lunch: Miso with tofu, spring onions, brown rice
Dinner: Frozen pizza

Frugal Fridays: Flexible Spending Accounts

It's time for the blog carnival Frugal Fridays - when we blog about the small habits and other tidbits we include in our comings and goings to save money on a regular basis.

We have a Flexible Spending Account through my husband's employer. It allows our healthcare-related expenses to be pre-tax, which ultimately saves us about 20% on what we spend on those expenses!

There are a couple of big ways that you can do FSA shopping once you secure an FSA through your employer. One is to buy FSA-elligible items, and submit receipts for those items at the end of the spending year. The other (which I use the most) is to buy FSA-elligible items with an FSA-specific credit card issued to you, and use that credit card only on FSA items to ensure that you are spending only on what qualifies.

The tricky part of an FSA is trying to determine a) what you already buy that qualifies, and b) how much you think you'll spend on that over the course of the spending year. If you don't use your FSA-set-aside dollars, you lose them! I know of a coworker who once discovered that her FSA spending year deadline was fast approaching, and so she set about finding a pricey pair of prescription glasses just to ensure that her FSA dollars wouldn't float out into the ether, utterly foregone.

As you can see, it can quickly turn into a "The Price Is Right"-style game. Ultimately, you're generally better off erring on the side of setting aside less than you'd spend than more, since FSA-set-aside money that you don't spend is forfeit.

Here are just a few examples of things that may qualify under your FSA plan (check your plan specifics to be sure!):

Over-the-counter cold and pain medications
Allergy medications
Sunscreen
Diaper rash creams
Bandages
Doctor's office visit and prescription copayments
Flu shots
Eyeglasses and contact lenses

...and much, much more! Even if you're a guru of CVS shopping, you could still stand to save 20% on whatever you do spend on FSA-elligible items, so that's more money in your pocket.

So check out the details of the FSA plans offered by your employers; once you determine your theoretical FSA-elligible pending over the course of the year, the rest (shopping for them, and sometimes saving receipts to submit at year's end) is pretty painless for all the savings you might reap.
